How battery backup works

Most grid-tied solar systems shut off during a power outage for safety. Adding a battery lets your home keep chosen circuits running.*

  • On a sunny dayYour panels power your home first, and extra solar energy can charge the battery.
  • When the grid goes downYour system separates from the grid, and the battery powers the essentials you chose, like lights, the refrigerator and Wi-Fi.
  • After the sun goes downDepending on your utility and setup, stored energy can be used in the evening.

What can a battery back up? It depends on battery capacity, the circuits you choose to back up and how much power you use. We’ll walk you through the options in your proposal.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Short answers. Ask us anything else at 215-464-6000.

Where do you offer home solar?

We offer home solar and battery backup to homeowners in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, from our office in Bensalem, Bucks County. Send us your address and we’ll confirm we can serve your home.

How long does it take?

It depends on your roof, your system design, local permits and your utility’s approval process. Your proposal includes an estimated timeline, and we keep you updated along the way.

What should I send for my free assessment?

A recent electric bill (a year of bills is even better), your home address and the best phone number to reach you. Let us know if you’re interested in battery backup. Email it all to solar@naturescurrent.com.

Is financing available?

Financing options may be available. Options vary by program and are subject to approval. Ask us what fits your budget.

What is net metering?

Net metering is how many utilities credit you for extra solar power your system sends to the grid, which can help offset power you use at night. Rules and credits vary by utility and state and can change, so we’ll explain how it works with your utility.

Do I still need my utility?

Yes. Your home stays connected to the grid, so you have power at night and on cloudy days. We coordinate the connection with your utility. In PA and NJ you can also choose who supplies your electricity while keeping your utility; see our Energy Choice page.

What if my roof needs work?

It’s usually best to repair or replace the roof first, so panels don’t have to come off later. We look at your roof during the assessment and can tell you if it should be addressed first.
